When most couples picture their honeymoon in Mexico, their minds immediately go to the beach.
But tucked between the mountains of southern Mexico is a city made for couples who want something a little different—beautiful architecture, incredible food, colorful streets, intimate boutique hotels, and days that invite you to slow down.
Oaxaca City is the kind of honeymoon destination you experience rather than simply visit.

There is something incredibly romantic about simply walking through Oaxaca.

One of my favorite things about Oaxaca is that your hotel doesn’t have to feel separate from your honeymoon.
There are beautiful boutique properties tucked inside historic buildings where courtyards, gardens, terraces, tilework, and architecture become part of the experience itself.
Instead of a massive resort where you could be almost anywhere in the world, you can choose somewhere that actually feels like Oaxaca.
Wake up slowly. Have coffee in the courtyard. Get dressed for dinner together. Walk out the front door and explore the city on foot.
There’s an intimacy to that kind of honeymoon that I love.
Stay for the Food
And then there’s the food.
Oaxaca is one of those places where deciding where to eat can become an entire honeymoon activity.
This is a region known for its culinary traditions—moles, tlayudas, memelas, chocolate, quesillo, mezcal and so much more.
You can have an incredible dinner one evening and spend the next morning wandering through a market trying completely different flavors.
That’s part of what makes Oaxaca so special for a honeymoon.
You’re experiencing something together.
Take a cooking class. Visit a market. Plan a beautiful dinner reservation. Try mezcal. Order something you’ve never eaten before. Find a tiny spot you weren’t planning to visit and discover that it becomes one of your favorite meals of the entire trip.
Years later, you may not remember every detail of your itinerary.
But you’ll probably remember that meal.

A honeymoon doesn’t have to mean spending seven days beside a resort pool.
